Sherlock’s smiles..

i love the Angelo/Free Food smile. omg.

am i the only one who thinks that “moriarty” smile is the most sincere smile of Sherlock?

I always feel that, too. I mean, Sherlock smiles at John (or things John says or does) usually when he finds something amusing. Else they full on laugh. But the smiles reserved for Moriary, when he’s fascinated by the stunts Jim pulls, those are very different. And he doesn’t evn smile at Moriarty. Sherlock smiles at the thought of him…

I love the Angelo one. That’s a smile that says ‘I’m pleased that you’re giving me the royal treatment, which I am of course entitled to.’ It might not come from the most honourable of sentiments but it is at least a genuine smile. He’s in a comfortable place, unashamedly asking in someone’s admiration.

The Molly smiles are heart-breaking to me because they look almost genuine (especially the one he gives her just before she shows them the dead men’s feet) and yet it’s not. It makes him look like a chivalrous, warm, slightly flirtatious version of himself - in other words, it makes him look like the man she’d prefer him to be. She knows he’s not, but it looks real enough that she can’t help but be affected and manipulated by it.

The Moriarty smiles are smiles of excitement. He probably doesn’t even know he’s doing it. Like smiling over a kidnapping, or serial suicides. But the Moriarty one is the most special of all of those - it’s not just another murder, it’s his nemesis, preparing to battle him. Honestly, I think it turns him on. That’s what that smile is. It’s a turned-on smile.

But I think it’s the John smiles that I like best, because that’s what made me fall for them both. Not of course the very first smile he gives John, which is so painfully faked you get the feeling he’s not even trying - but the ones that come later. His first real smile at John - when John’s laughing over ‘welcome to London’ - and this one here, too - it’s completely unaffected, unselfconscious, and mixed with surprise. It has a sweet awkwardness to it, as if he’s out of practice. You get the feeling it might be the first time he’s ever smiled and laughed with someone instead of at them. He laughs like someone who’s never laughed before. By the end of the episode (SiP) it’s as if he can barely contain it - and you know it’s not that he’s still tickled by their jokes about the cabbie. He’s smiling because he can’t believe that he’s finally found a friend.
